My list would be something like this:
  Asus P5K Premium $209 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131190
  Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 $279 (or Xeon X3210, $246) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017
  GSkill 4gb DDR2-800 $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122
  PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610w Powersupply $119 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703005&Tpk=PC%2bPower%2b%2526%2bCooling%2bSilencer%2b610w%2bPowersupply
  Western Digital 150gb Raptor $169 (Seagate 500gb 7200.11 if you want space $119) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136012
  EVGA 512-P3-N802-A1 GeForce 8800GT 512mb $289 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130303
  Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme $70 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835109140
The rest I agree with Jeremy on, although nice cases can be had for under $100.
  A few examples: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133145 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137&Tpk=CM690

I'm over that $1400, but most of the stuff I don't see normal people needing. Like a sound card? Onboard works for most people, save the money.
My list above is $1051, plus the other stuff you may or may not need. Monitor, $200. Mouse, $60. Keyboard, $90. Headset, $10. Speakers, $50. DVD Drive, $25.

That makes it $1486. If you need reasons why I picked what I did, just ask. |
