and now arises another problem... after reformatting tonight, which ive done 3 times now, the windows installation freezes while "Installing Devices" with exactly "34 minutes remaining" each and every time i do it...
first reformat, froze... reformatted again, froze again, and again... reformatted again, froze again, and again...
so now i have no desktop at all, no games at all, and if any of you have suggestions as to what is going on, that would be great! Cuz im sure you fellas would have some type of sympathy for ur fellow gamer, who can NO LONGER GAME AT ALL! my computer [rif] and me! |

Try removing all of your expansion cards from the system, including your video card if you have onboard video, which I'm sure your "Gateway" does. This will let you know if it's hanging on a device that is in your computer. If this doesn't work then get a different disk and try it again. If all else fails try another hard drive, I'm sure Adam or someone has a spare drive laying around.
Sounds like you better expedite that new pc. If your looking for assistance building your new pc you should probably consult the thread labled "Jack Comp." There is a lot of good info in there that would also apply to all the questions you've asked about a new pc. If you don't want to spend more than $1,000 then I'd say you don't want to build a real gaming system. But if I get some time, I'll throw together a budget gaming system and see what it tally's up to.
This thread also belongs in the tech support area for future reference. |

Why don't you try running diagnostics on system make sure your hardware is OK. Like ram/cpu
http://www.memtest86.com/ You will need a working pc to create the ISO image cd. Once cd is create boot off your cd and let it run a while see if system locks up or maybe see errors with ram.
After ram test is ok test your hard drive. What brand of hard drive do you have Western Digital, Seagate, Ibm, Maxtor? They all have some diagnostics tools to check your hard drive for problems.
If no errors on your hard drive test. Windows could be hanging on a driver the PC does not like. Take out any extra PCI cards you don't need and try installing Windows again. If you have on board video and you have a PCI Express video plug in take that out try to make pc as simple as you can to get windows on it. You can add the stuff later once windows runs.
What was the problem you had before?
Was the pc locking up before you formated it? If so lock up problems can come from from about anything in your pc.
On your new pc don't buy another Gateway or even a Dell for a gaming pc. Cause they have standard main board in them. Buy a real pc with a main board that [bm]

Kevin, Not a bad idea. However, I would advise against that 8800GTS unless its a G92. No point in spending money on old technology.
Here is eVGA's 8800GTS G92: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130312
The ultra combo thingy is cool, but let me give you a few tips.
The case BLOWS. I have one, shotty, and super cheap aluminum.
The mainboard is the low end LT chipset. I'd stay away from 680i if possible. (Slower than the intel chipsets and 680i is known to have problems with quad core cpus) If you plan on going SLI, get 790i.
I'd stay as far away from Ultra Power supplies. I've hear so many horror stories about them. Just randomly dieing, blowing up and taking out system components.
2gb is the bare minimum anymore, do 4gb if you can.
To be totally honest, the setup would be fine. Its just not made of the best components and i would bet something won't last longer than 6months.
If your spending the money, get good components.

I just emailed you the newegg wish list. |

Wes - I didn't get an email about it.. My address is ::Admin DA removed email address:: if that is not what it says in my profile.. So if you would please, re-send the email.. |

Thats odd, same email address I got from your profile.
I emailed it again.
EDIT:
That list isn't bad. Again I have a few grips thou.
The video card, again. Go with the one I linked above. Its the newest G92 chipset. Same specs and newer chip. It is another $50 thou. I'd just hate to see you spend the money on old and already dated technology.
The mainboard is the only other thing. 650i? Yuck, thats worse than the 680i problems. I'd stick with Intel Chipsets (P35 or X38 do a filter on newegg) unless you want SLI, then the only SLI chipset i'd recommend is the new 790i. |

No problem, Wes and I will always differ on what we recommend, I'm more brand oriented than he is. You'll always see me quote an MSI mainboard because they are rock solid and it's a noob board, sometimes the Asus boards can be a bitch for a novice to setup. This is not a crack against Asus, they do make a good board but to a newbie the bios "can" be confusing. Evga is the only video card I will use until I have one fail on me. I like the lifetime warranty and their support is "rated" very well. Beyond personal experience and hearsay I'm just using my preferences, Wes reads a lot more than I do and is much more knowledgeable on that stuff than I am. I don't take the time to get all involved in it. I know what works for me and I just roll with it. I would definately use Newegg over Tiger though, I would even use ZipZoomFly over Tiger...
Wes what's your reading on the PCI-E 2.0 cards reveal? From my understanding there's not really a performance increase correct? Just less power???
Kevin give one of these two boards a shot the x38 boards are going to be way out of your price range: Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131189 MSI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130098 |
